Quand il s'engage dans la guerre d'Espagne en 1936, c'est un peu comme si un intellectuel occidental contemporain partait se battre contre les Serbes à Sarajevo ou contre l'Etat Islamique en Irak ou en Syrie. J'ai réalisé en allant sur les lieux où se sont déroulés les principaux évènements de la vie d'Orwell à quel point ils avaient été formateurs dans sa carrière d'écrivain. La précision de ses descriptions, son oeil pour le détail, sa compréhension des phénomènes qu'il observe et de leur effet sur les êtres humains font de lui un auteur qu'il faut lire et relire.
Du collège d'Eton, le basHon de l'élite britannique, où il est boursier jusqu'à l'île écossaise de Jura, où il use ses dernières forces à écrire 1984, en passant par la Birmanie où il est un rouage de l'impérialisme, les taudis de Manchester et de Paris, le front de la guerre d'Espagne et la Barcelone des luttes intestines de la République espagnole, on découvre avec combien étroitement la vie et les expériences d'Orwell inspirent et irrigue en permanence son oeuvre".
